For the benefit of the consumer, the packaging should comply with certain guidelines. DesignerPeople has learnt these guidelines by studying the recommendations from Indian Government Body – FSSAI. Here is some insight available for you to read through. This document should educate on integral information required on packaging designing to educate the end consumer.
1.) Date of Manufacture
It refers to the date when the food is converted to the product due to industrial involvement.
2.) Best Before
It refers to the period under which the food shall consist all specific qualities as claimed on the packaging. Post Best before date, the food may still remain safe to consume, however its quality may get deteriorate. After the Best before date the consumption of such food may cause health hazard.
3.) Date of Packaging
It refers to the date when food is being packed in the packaging which will be sold.
4.) Lot Number or Code Number or Batch Number
It should be either numeric or a combination of alpha numeric by which the packaging can be traced in manufacturing unit and distribution network.
5.) Infant
Infant means a child up to twelve months of age and not above 1 year. It is an important instruction to find out if the product can be consumed by Infant or not.
6.) Multi Piece Package
When a product is projected for sale either in individual pieces or packages as a whole “Multi piece package” needs to be mentioned clearly.
7.) Non Vegetarian Food Symbol Icon
Any product containing animal, bird, water body animal and egg in any form shall be considered as “Non- Vegetarian Food” however milk or milk products does not fall in this category.
8.) Vegetarian Food Symbol Icon
Vegetarian Food will include any such food, which does not include Non- Vegetarian Food as defined in regulation under Non Vegetarian food.
9.) Principal Display Panel
It means that part of the packaging that is to be shown or examined by the purchaser of the item contained in the packaging.
10.) Prepackaged or Pre-packed Food
It refers that product is ready to be sold to the consumer. In packaged food stuffing cannot be distorted without opening it.
11.) Use–by Date or Recommended Last Consumption Date or Expiry Date
It refers to the date after which the product should neither be sold nor consumed. After this date the food may not have the quality and safety parameters as described. Consumption of the product after this date may cause health hazard.
12.) Wholesale Package
Wholesale package will consist of number of retail packages and will not be intended to be sold as a single item but will always be sold in bulk.
